What is NDIS Community Participation?

NDIS Community Participation funding is officially called Assistance with Social, Economic and Community Participation (Core Supports Category 4). It funds the practical support you need to take part in community, social, and recreational activities that your disability makes harder to access independently.

It is one of the most flexible budgets in an NDIS plan. Under plan-managed or self-managed funding, you choose your own providers, workers, and activities based on your goals.

Frequently Asked Questions: NDIS Community Participation

What is NDIS Community Participation funding?

NDIS Community Participation funding (Support Category 4: Assistance with Social, Economic and Community Participation) is part of your Core Supports budget. It funds the practical support you need to take part in social, recreational, civic, and community activities that your disability makes harder to access independently.

Who qualifies for NDIS Community Participation support?

Participants whose disability creates a genuine barrier to accessing community life. This includes physical disabilities affecting mobility in public spaces, communication or social difficulties, sensory processing challenges, mental health conditions limiting social engagement, and complex support needs requiring 1:1 assistance in community settings.

How much community participation funding can I receive?

Funding varies based on your individual assessment. Light support needs typically receive $5,000 to $15,000 per year. Moderate needs may receive $15,000 to $35,000. High needs can receive more. Your NDIS planner and treating team determine the amount based on your goals and functional capacity.

Can I use my community participation funding for sports, art classes, or social clubs?

Yes. Sports clubs, art and music classes, social groups, day programs, volunteering, and community events are all commonly funded activities. Your NDIS funding pays for the support worker who assists you to participate. You pay for the activity costs such as entry fees or class fees yourself.
